Finnish earnings-related pension provider Varma has published its new sustainability programme for 2026-2030, focused on meaningful sustainability actions.
The programme, a continuation of its two previous sustainability programmes, is based on the environmental and social impacts that the provider has identified in collaboration with its stakeholders, as well as the risks and opportunities within the value chain of its operations.
Varma vice president corporate responsibility, Hanna Kaskela, said the sustainability programme is “not just a list of goals, but daily activities with which we influence the future”.
“Climate change, biodiversity and human rights are important themes for us. With the programme, we ensure that pensions are secured, reduce the environmental impact of our investments, and promote good work ability and the well-being of our employees,” Kaskela added.
Varma interviewed its customers to gather their expectations, while employees from various business units also contributed to developing the content of the sustainability program.
The sustainability programme is divided into four parts: ensuring earnings-related pension cover, preparing for the future by investing responsibly, promoting sustainable work ability and being a good workplace for Varma employees.
The provider’s responsibility programme outlines clearly defined, concrete actions and measures, including specific goals, strategies, and indicators for various components of the sustainability initiative.
These targets are monitored as part of tracking Varma’s business goals, and progress toward the programme’s objectives is reviewed in detail every six months. It reports on the progress of the sustainability programme and the achievement of the targets in our sustainability report.
Varma president and CEO, Risto Murto, said that responsibility is caught between many different national interests and geopolitical tensions.
“At Varma, sustainability has been developed on a long-term basis, and it will continue to be central to us in the future,” he continued. “With our new programme, we will ensure that sustainability is concrete actions alongside our customers and partners.”
